Fried Pumpkin Flowers: A light snack first eaten by Native Americans. {Can something FRIED really be called a light snack? Okaay then!}

Here is the photojournal of our primary effort, last Sunday afternoon:

Our friend, Sam, showed up just in time to help us sample this new delicacy. The census opinion was that they were good- edible, palatable, but not AMAZING. Surely this could be done better. What we were looking for was a sweeter, more "mmmhmm!" flavor. We discussed options: adding sugar to the process, using flour instead of crackers and buttermilk instead of eggs... However, no further crop was yet available for experimentation and Yosi woke up.

TAKE TWO

Today at the Palestine city wide garage sales, David found a book called "The Pumpkin Shell" by Jennifer Story Gillis, and purchased it for 25 cents. It was worth far more than its cost when we discovered a recipe for fried pumpkin blossoms that included BEER. Beer batter! Genius! Just the thing.

Here we are, putting it into play: [again, while Bean is presumably napping... However, when she started calling for us 15min after she should have been asleep, I went up to check on her and discovered that she had removed her diaper and proceeded to wet the bed- yay. Gladly, she went to sleep soon thereafter, but only after crying for a few minutes because she only had ONE pacie in her bed... oh, the drama!]

These turned out to be much more tasty. Still, not my new favorite food, but certainly a tasty celebration of the onset of the season.
